unusally high Idle

Postby dangitbit2 » Sun Sep 15, 2013 6:38 pm

I have a stock 88 GT. In recent years I have dealt with erritic Idle problems, caused by either Vacmum hoses or PVC tubes. I have cleaned the throttle body and for the past year or so everthing was good. warm Idle was around 800 rpm. Recently the Idle has started staying around 1400 to 1500rpm even when the engine is warm. The Oxygen sensor has never been replaced and I have one not yet
installed but I'm not sure this will correct this? Has anyone else had this issue? Could this be caused by the TPS sensor?

Check the egr tube itis a likely culprit. Seen it a few times on the 2.8.
Yes it can be done, it just depends on how deep your wallet is!

also Brian's 88 "the Affair" had the same problem, his fix was a new idle air control valve. A symptom for that is an unusually loud sucking sound from the throttle body with the intake off you can stick your finger on the air passage, if the idle goes down where it should be then replace it. While doing this listen for any other vacuum leaks as Chug mentioned they may now be more noticeable.

I know I'm late to the party on this one - but also replace your PCV valve. Check out CowsPatoot's thread here about this... viewtopic.php?f=34&t=4197

Even if it sounds "good" it could be the problem, and would give you the issue you're dealing with.

Good add in Trinten, any pointers that can be added no matter how long after are still good for the next person with the same issue because you never know which will be the problem solver for them.
