I had a bunch of scrap wood and materials laying around from old projects so I figured I would start on my interior. PO's interior choice was red, not my fav color. I decided to go with black on black.
I have painted/dyed most of the interior plastic trim except the driver door. I had a local shop do the upholstery, my funds are so limited I did not want to screw it up. I am gonna have them recover the seats at some point.
I only had to order the perforated black vinyl (sorry it doesn't show up in the pics) and got the reg black vinyl locally for very cheap. Perforated on the dash top and armrest/ glove box and reg black on the custom center console sides. I ran a piece of plastic chrome trim in the groove on the dash to cover the fabric cut line. I like it but will probably sand it and paint it to match the trim plate color which I am going to go a bit darker with. Right now the chrome strip really sticks out visually. It works, but just needs to be a bit more subtle.
I also put in cheap black carpet until I am able to afford something better. I have to say though that with the fireo store black Fiero GT floor mats you cant tell it is cheap carpet. I will try to get a pic of them up.
All I have left for the interior is to do the headliner, build the computer cover where the old glove box used to be, get and install dash speakers. Right now I am running with just the left 'B' pillar speaker.
I built the rough frame which I have added black ABS inserts to the center. The spacing is slightly different so I had to route out a new center console trim plate. I painted the center upright trim plate and covered the lower plate with a special craft foam sheet. The sheet resembles suede and has great non slide properties so my phone etc doesn't slide around the console.
I went with this dash shape rather than something more smooth and contemporary because I felt it would look as if it could have come with the car. Other custom console I have seen look really out of place. Also I could have made it one unit rather than having the aux gauges mounting plate being removable but it created access and removal issues. I worked the wood so it would have a similar curvature to the original console. I need to work a bit on the fit and finish of the vinyl where the two pieces meet but other than that I am happy with it.
The arm rest/ glove box hinge plate is secured to the console by (4) screws up thru the bottom. It may look small but it holds everything I need. The power outlet is in the rear of the glove box. I put (2) notches in the front wall of the glove box so I can run power cables etc out to the open area of the console while keeping the arm rest down.
The power window buttons are from an 86 BMW 735i. The PO put them in. I upgraded them to the illuminated version. They glow a slight red at night so they go with the factory gauge colors.
Over all I am pleased with the results. I will tweak the fit and finish for a while. I want it to look clean and professional. The nav unit satellite receiver magnet is in the windshield top center of the dash. Believe it or not it works great. I could have drilled and taped it to the top of the car or some other exterior point but where it is seems to work great and keeps it safe. The actual nav brain box is under the left of the dash against the driver side wall my only concern is if the speaker magnet will effect it....we'll have to see.
I hope you guys like pics. I will try to get more up. If there are any questions I will do my best to answer them as quickly as possible but forgive me if it takes a day or two. Here is the link to more pics:
